In our tradition, pastors are not appointed by the denomination, they are called by the local congregation. We don’t believe this means we are “right” and others are “wrong.” It is simply the way churches like ours have operated over the years. We have an opening for a Pastor of Engagement.

“Excuses, Excuses…”

You’ll probably hear this quote again on Sunday, but Warren Wiersbe once wrote, “People who are good at making excuses are rarely good at anything else.” Ouch. That seems a quite harsh but if we take a little time to reflect on the statement, we see the value of this reminder. People who make excuses can’t grow if they refuse to own their failures. When we confess our failures, we can find ways of living differently.

“Evangelistically Speaking”

A man named Phil Cooke wrote, “I find it interesting (and somewhat sad) that pastors and evangelists have exaggerated so much for so long, that people have actually created a term for it: “evangelistically speaking.” He is right. It’s sad that the people who are entrusted with a message as important as the gospel would use deceptive practices to enhance their image. The subject of evangelism has been taught, maligned, practiced and misused. We really need to return to the simple definition of the word; to evangelize means to proclaim good news.
