“Friendship: Dangers and Blessings”

The friendship between Jonathan and David is legendary. Their love, respect and care for one another is a beautiful example of mutual commitment and devotion. Friendship is not unique to Christians or the Bible. Friendship is a universal blessing and privilege. The blessings of friendship are many. Someone has said that “friendship doubles our joys and halves our sorrows.” David’s life was saved by Jonathan’s diligence and intervention.

Companies like 23andMe will analyze a person’s DNA to help them understand what people groups they came from, who they are connected to and thereby provide some context for a person’s life. The desire for this information reminds us that most people have a desire to know where they came from, who they are and why they are here. This self-awareness is unique to humans because God has “put eternity in our hearts,” according to Ecclesiastes 3:11. We want to know where we fit, if we have a purpose for being here and what comes after “this.”

A popular author wrote a book a few years ago titled, “The Forgotten God.” It was about “our tragic neglect of the Holy Spirit.” I’m not sure if “our” means all people in the church, his people or what people exactly. It’s obvious that some believers have neglected the Holy Spirit because there is no fruit of the Spirit in their lives. However, it seems a bit hyperbolic to imply that the whole church has neglected the Holy Spirit.

“Larger Giants”

Goliath was large. The Philistine army was large. But, in truth, there were larger giants that David had to kill. He didn’t kill them all, but he did kill many of them and that’s one reason we still talk about David to this day. Revenge is a large giant and it has defeated many strong people. Idealism has ruined many well-educated leaders. The inconsistency of the establishment has driven some people loony. The largest giants that David killed were the ones in his own heart—they’re the ones that most of us face.
