Two words. They sound similar and some people use them interchangeably but there is a difference of definition. To be conscious is to be aware. Sometimes we talk about the sub-conscious. The sub-conscious is that part of our mind that shapes us in ways we are not aware of at the time. If we are conscious, we are alert, or at least awake and aware of our surroundings. If we are unconscious, we have been knocked out or we’ve had a long day and we are sleeping. The word conscience describes that part of our inner being that acts as a moral guide. The conscience is not always a good guide. To use modern language, the conscience can be programmed so that wrong seems right and right seems wrong. Some people have successfully terminated their conscience to their harm. They have no compass for right or wrong and can become some of the most dangerous people in the world. Are you aware of your moral compass? Are you conscious of your conscience? Your conscience is right or wrong to the degree that it agrees with God’s expressed will. If your conscience allows you to lie, you better not let your conscience be your guide. What if your conscience is always condemning you and you feel guilty all the time? By Biblical definition, you have a weak conscience. One of the benefits of believing the gospel is the re-training of the conscience. Our text on Sunday assures us that the applied blood of Jesus not only changes the believer’s status before God, but it also goes all the way inside and cleanses the individual all the way to the conscience! Maturing in Christ means our conscience is in harmony with His heart—it’s the way to life! Are you conscious of your conscience?
