Happy Birthday America! A lot has happened in 250 years! Just think about how much change has taken place. It’s hard to take it all in. We should be so very, very grateful for the freedoms we enjoy and the flourishing life that America has made possible for millions of people. My mom’s parents came from Holland. My dad’s great-grandparents came from England. Of course, there are some native people but most of us are here because somewhere in our history, our ancestor’s believed America was the land of promise. Religious freedom was a major consideration for some; for others, it was the promise of land, prosperity and opportunity. Some were brought here against their will. Others came for the adventure. Whatever the reason, here we are. And, as wonderful as it is to be 250 years old, there was something before America. The church! Though a few people hate to admit it, the church has had a major role in the life of the American people. We cannot know what “might have been” but even a cursory look at some of the developing countries that have rejected Christ and His life may be an indication of what we’d be. So, this weekend is a “big deal.” While you are thanking God for this country, make sure you also thank Him for His church and the impact of the teachings of Jesus on our lives.
