“Your God is Too Small”

That’s the title of a book by J.B. Phillips that I found by accident one day. I don’t remember where I found it, but the title grabbed my attention and drew me in. It was published the year I was born, 1961. Its relevance has not diminished with time. Mr. Phillips outlined some of the destructive and inadequate views of God that are held by people both in and out of the church. Then, in the second half of the book, he described how God has made His true Self known to mankind. His description of how God “scaled down” in order enter human existence and make Himself known is “delicious.” I bring this subject up this week because of where we will be studying this coming Sunday. Isaiah 40 is a classic chapter for many reasons but one is the way God’s immensity is described with beauty and a bit of sarcasm. If we are worshiping a baby this time of the year, our God is too small. As Phillips wrote, “We have to get beyond our clinging mass of sentimentality, superstitious reverence and traditional associations…” We must use the brains God gave us and the Light that was sent to every one of us and see God as He must be if He is worthy of the title “God,” and see Him as He is as He has made Himself known in the Incarnate Messiah Jesus Christ. Let us worship Him spirit to Spirit and in Truth.
