We’ve been studying the parallel and interwoven stories of Saul and David. They worked together. They had conflicts. They both had lapses in faith and at times, lived contrary to God’s good ways. In some ways they were similar but on a heart level, they were different. When David was confronted with truth, he repented. When Saul was confronted, his heart became harder. David was a man “after God’s own heart,” not because he was perfect but rather because he submitted to God when confronted by truth. Saul had the same opportunities and privileges but like Judas, Saul would not humble himself under the mighty hand of God. When we set our heart against His heart, there is never a happy ending. As we wrap up our study of 1 Samuel this week, we’ll note the sad and humiliating end of Saul and his sons. It didn’t have to end the way it did. Sadly, there are a lot of stories like that. There are stories without a happy ending. The story we are a part of has yet to conclude. What will the ending of our earthly story look like?
