There are certain geographic locations that remind us of difficult times but there are also places that remind us of grace. Hopefully you have a place or two that evokes memories of God’s goodness and kindness toward you. We often refer to places like that as “Bethel.” Bethel means “house of God,” it’s the place where Jacob met with God. Bethel places remind us of the presence of God and His ministry to and for us. I have several places like that, and I like to visit them periodically to refresh my memory about God’s faithfulness. The Brook Besor was a place of grace. David left 200 of his 600 soldiers there because the 200 were too tired to go to battle. When David returned from battle, there was a moment of tension between the soldiers who had gone to fight and those who stayed at the Brook Besor. The ones who fought weren’t feeling very generous with all the stuff they had brought back. The ones who stayed behind were probably feeling a little ashamed since they rested while all their fellow soldiers went to war. What happened was a beautiful reminder of grace that was initiated by David. David knew why they won the battle and Who had provided the stuff they brought back. That recognition makes a huge difference in how we treat possessions and others. The Brook Besor became a place of grace. Hopefully we have some of those places, if not, we can initiate the actions that make it so for others.
