“Pentecost Sunday”

A popular author wrote a book a few years ago titled, “The Forgotten God.” It was about “our tragic neglect of the Holy Spirit.” I’m not sure if “our” means all people in the church, his people or what people exactly. It’s obvious that some believers have neglected the Holy Spirit because there is no fruit of the Spirit in their lives. However, it seems a bit hyperbolic to imply that the whole church has neglected the Holy Spirit. The data indicates that millions of people have responded to the wooing of the Spirit and many of them exhibit His fruit. If it seems like the Father and the Son get more attention than the Spirit, He’s doing His job. Jesus said that when the Spirit did come, He would glorify Jesus. If the Holy Spirit received more attention than Jesus, we should probably wonder why. This Sunday is Pentecost. We remember and give thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Fifty days after the Passover the Jews celebrated the provision of God. Fifty days after the Resurrection, the Holy Spirit filled the Church and empowered the believers to proclaim the gospel and authenticate the message with supernatural signs and wonders. The Holy Spirit is still working to glorify Jesus by transforming His followers into His image. This is supernatural and we can all be a part of what the Spirit is doing in the world today.
