Have you ever observed the irrational behavior of someone and wondered how they thought what they were doing was a good idea? Have you ever been the one with the irrational behavior? Looking back on your own actions, you can’t believe you did what you did and may still be wondering why you did it! There are a number of reasons that people do crazy things. Sometimes lack of experience leads people to believe they are capable of more than they think. Sometimes, people simply do not think—they act on impulse. Sometimes peer pressure overwhelms their reason, and they act against what they know to be a good idea. Another reason, according to the Scripture, is that sin can make people stupid. The writer of proverbs reminds us that “iniquities entrap the wicked, he is caught in the cords of his own sin.” We can become so blinded in our sin that we justify all kinds of bizarre behavior. To the observer, we look crazy—to ourselves, we look rational. Ignoring God’s ways is a dangerous way to live. Disobedience and rebellion blind us to the reality of where we are headed. King Saul’s life is an illustration of what can happen to a person filled with self-will, self-effort and self-justification. He looked crazy because he was crazy. He was crazy because he refused the Spirit’s convicting work in his life. Let’s not be “that guy.”
