“Larger Giants”

Goliath was large. The Philistine army was large. But, in truth, there were larger giants that David had to kill. He didn’t kill them all, but he did kill many of them and that’s one reason we still talk about David to this day. Revenge is a large giant and it has defeated many strong people. Idealism has ruined many well-educated leaders. The inconsistency of the establishment has driven some people loony. The largest giants that David killed were the ones in his own heart—they’re the ones that most of us face. Who among us has been tempted to settle a score? Who among us has gone nearly crazy with the moving target of a boss or administration? Who among us has sought the approval of others to our own shame and embarrassment? The giants within are the hardest to kill. It seems like we cut their heads off and they grow new ones! Just when we think Goliath is dead and gone, we hear his mocking voice again. Just when we thought our peers would be pleased with our accomplishments, another mocker joins the crowd. Just when we thought our hearts were clear of the desire to get even, someone does us wrong. Some giants won’t stay dead. Seeking the approval of people is a giant that we will fight until we die but David found a way to victory, he even wrote a song about it; you might want to read through Psalm 18 sometime this weekend.
