“Let Go…”

In the late 1600’s a French clergyman named Francois Fenelon wrote a series of letters that have been preserved and reprinted in a little book titled, “Let Go.” The words of those letters, written so many years ago, have often resulted in repentance. Fenelon’s struggle was similar to what many of us wrestle with; our will clashes with the will of others and/or the will of God. This conflict of will is the source of much of our unhappiness and anxiety. This might be semantics but sometimes our struggle is to surrender and sometimes it is to submit. In other words, sometimes we are striving over what God has done or not done, and we need to surrender. Or sometimes we are wrestling with a matter of obedience, and we need to submit. Either way, the struggle is because we are clinging to our own way of thinking and our own desire. What is needed is death to self. Fenelon wrote, “You asked for a remedy, that your problems might be cured. You do not need to be cured; you need to be slain.” Ouch. That “self-slaying” is not possible alone. We will need God’s gracious Spirit to assist us. He will help us mortify self-will like He helped David slay Goliath. But, we’re going to have to be a part of the process. Will you let Him have His way today?
