I Can't but You Can

Years ago, I was taught that every child needs a healthy balance between support and challenge. Of course, no parent perfectly hits the nail on the head but it is wise to keep in mind. My wife, Amanda, leans toward support and I lean toward challenge. This tension has been what has made us a good team. That said, I am a big promoter of personal responsibility. So, one of my favorite memories from my kids’ school experience is when 4th grade teacher Mr. Springsteen had them bury their “I can’t”. He walked them out into the yard at Baldwin Heights, had them dig a hole and put their “I can’t” piece of paper in the grave and cover it with dirt! Why? While a well cared for child is accustomed to support they must be challenged in order to grow. He taught them to exchange the “I can’t” for the “I can”, a necessary lesson in life.

But there are times when our “I can” is not enough. Our text this Sunday, Romans 3:20-26, presents us with a real “I can’t”. I can’t save myself. I can’t make myself righteous. I can’t solve my biggest problem. Times like this require me to unbury the “I can’t”. Accepting my limitations and need allows Another to support me. This is often a hard pill to swallow. We see ourselves as responsible adults. And we are. To God, though, we are children. As a wise Father, He knows when to support and when to challenge. When it comes to our standing with God, it must be all support. Salvation is of the Lord. The best prayer in that case is “I can’t but You can”. And the wonderful thing is…He has!
