What is Truth?
Ask Becky. Becky is a young lady at Thrive who came in not knowing her name was Becky. During the night she was called by a different name, but during the lesson on truth, she found out her name was actually Becky. Or was it?
As the speaker, I addressed the young lady by the name Becky. With confidence I called her "Becky". The conversation went on for a bit with slight frustration in the minds of the crowd.
"Check her birth certificate!" one student shouted out. And rightfully so.
You see, Becky is not actually the young lady's name. But what if I believed it was? Does that make it truth? If we checked her birth certificate, we would have a source of authority of what the truth really is.
Do you see the problem if we start with our view of truth without starting with the authority?
In Paul's letter to Timothy, he encourages him to hold on to truth as the foundation of what they are doing.
There is A truth, not your truth or my truth. Truth is truth.
1Timothy 3:14-15 shares a small glimpse into this message Paul was passing on to Timothy. "I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth." (bold words are for emphasis)
You can know Truth.
You ought to act in accordance with Truth.
The Truth is the pillar, or foundation of how we should live.
If we start with the right foundation and build from there, we will be able to live freely in Truth and life.
If not, we start our foundation on lies. Jesus tells us that the father of lies, the devil does not stand for truth because there is no truth in him (John 8:44-45).
There cannot be multiple truths.
Jesus says, "I am the way the Truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
So, let me ask you a question. Are you seeking truth? Are you going to the source of truth for truth? Or are you taking your thoughts and desires and trying to make your own truth?
I pray we seek the true foundation as Isaiah 28:16-17 states; "Therefore thus says the Lord God, 'Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a sone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: 'Whoever believes will not be in haste.' And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter."
